Brief Introduction:
Dr. Cherie S. Tan is a Distinguished Professor at the Medical School of Tianjin University. Her journey in analytical science began at the University of Waterloo, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree under the tutelage of Professor Janusz Pawliszyn (FRSC). She then transitioned to the biotechnology industry, working for four years in the San Francisco Bay Area and rising to the rank of Senior Bioanalytical Scientist at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. Driven by a desire to better understand cancer genomics, she returned to academia for her Ph.D., focusing on nanopore sequencing of DNA lesions under the guidance of Professors Cynthia J. Burrows and Henry S. White. Following her postdoctoral training, she established her independent research group at Tianjin University in 2019, where her laboratory now pioneers new methods in nanopore sequencing, biomarker discovery, and electrochemical aptasensor development.
Academic Achievements:
The Tan group is an interdisciplinary research team that integrates electrochemistry, photochemistry, and analytical technology to advance the understanding of nucleic acid modifications and to develop novel biosensors for disease-related biomarkers. Our research spans analytical chemistry, molecular biology, and biomedical engineering, with a focus on three interconnected areas: nanopore sensing, electrochemical and photochemical analysis of DNA/RNA damage, and point-of-care testing (POCT) device development. We design chemical and biological sensors capable of discriminating cancer-related biomarkers and interrogating stress-induced genomic lesions. The laboratory is uniquely composed of biologists, chemists, engineers, and data analysts who collaborate to translate fundamental electrochemical principles into clinically relevant diagnostic platforms.
